Bevel one end of the rear cradle at degrees, then glue it to the upright at a degrees angle to the bottom edge of the upright. As you glue the front cradle in place, check that the two cradle pieces are degrees to each other. Next, cut the pieces for the saddle. The saddle fits over the tablesaw rip fence without any play, but still allows the jig to slide smoothly. To use the jig, make a mark on the bottom of the corner receiving the spline to indicate the depth of the kerf.
Place the project in the cradle, and raise the blade so its highest tooth just touches that mark, as shown in the photo. Slide the jig back from the blade and reposition the rip fence to cut the kerf for the spline. It's easy enough to hold or tape sandpaper to your bench to sand small parts.
But any unevenness in Skip to main content. Spline jig strengthens miter joints. Easily cut slots for splines with this tablesaw jig. Facebook Pinterest Twitter Text.
Add a spline across the joint. The spline provides long-grain surface area for more effective gluing, and it also creates a sturdy, self-aligning mechanical connection.
You can downplay the look of these joints by using spline stock that matches the rest of the box, or choose a contrasting-colored wood for a custom touch. Step 1: You can cut the mitered ends of your box parts on a miter saw, but a table saw and miter gauge can be just as accurate with careful setup.
It's crucial that the angle is spot-on, or the miter joints won't form square corners. Step 2: Square up your miter gauge, and fasten a long auxiliary fence to it. If your box parts are relatively short, you can use the scrap fence and a stop block to cut the workpieces accurately to length. Start by miter-cutting one end of each of the parts, then clamp a stop block to the fence. Position it so the distance from the block to the blade equals the part length you want.
Set the mitered end of the workpiece against the block, and miter-cut the other end. Cut the other matching part before repositioning the block, if necessary, to cut the remaining two parts.
Locate them at or near the inside corner of the joint for maximum strength. Use the stop block, again, to register the spline cuts. Mark one miter where the spline will go. Now clamp the block to the miter gauge fence so the blade touches your layout mark on the waste side of the line, with the workpiece pressed against the block. Step 4: Adjust the blade height to cut half the spline width into each mitered end.
Make a test cut on scrap stock first to check the depth setting, then cut the spline slots on all four workpieces. Step 5: Rip strips of spline stock off the edge of a long piece of scrap.A spline joint is created when a wooden spline is inserted and glued into a slot or groove that has been cut in another woodworking joint, usually a butt, edge or mitered joint.
The spline serves to reinforce the joint and help keep the two sections aligned with each other. This small enhancement adds considerable strength to whatever joint it's applied to.
The spline itself can be made from plywood, hardwood or the same material as the joint being strengthened. For the ultimate in strength, the grain of natural woods should be oriented so that it's running across the joint in the workpiece. Splines should never be forced into the grooves, which could cause them to distort or split. Rather, they should slide in easily, but without any side play, to allow enough room for glue to ensure a solid joint.
The width of the spline when used between two boards, whether miter or edge joint, should be slightly less than the width of both slots, to ensure the joint will close fully. The miter spline is great for reinforcing picture frames, mirror frames and even cabinet face frames that utilize mitered corners.
Small decorative boxes can use contrasting colored splines with mitered corners for visual effect, as well as reinforcing the joints. Spline between miters. Spline in slot cut in corner. Both styles of miter spline above can be made using a table saw or router table to cut the slots. A simple jig can be made to cut the slots on the table saw, while a slotting bit can be used with the router table. The splines are generally not more than a third the total thickness of the workpieces. It's best to cut the spline oversize and then trim and sand smooth once the glue has dried.
A dry fit before glue up is also recommended. Miter spline joints look great when using contrasting colors of wood. A light colored spline set in a darker wood will draw the eye and highlight the joint.
An ebony or black walnut spline set in a lighter colored wood will do the same. Edge splines are often used to make larger panels out of several narrower boards. Although an edge to edge glue up is already fairly strong because of the long grain to long grain gluing surfaces, splines offer an extra measure of support as well as aiding in alignment of the joint. An edge spline running the length of two boards. The most common edge spline joint has the groove and spline running the full length of the boards.
The spline is visible when the joint is viewed from the ends. If appearance is not important, plywood makes an excellent spline for this purpose. If appearance is important, the spline can be made from solid wood to either blend in or contrast.
The stopped edge spline is much like a stopped dado joint in that the groove is stopped short of the end of the board, although on both ends in this case. A cleaner look with a stopped groove. Mainly used for the tops of hardwood tables and other fine furniture, where the craftsman would like the extra strength from the spline, but without it being visible.
Although the groove can be cut on the table saw, it is probably easier and less work to rout it out on a router table with a slotting bit. The corners of the slot can either be chiseled square to accept the spline or the spline's ends could be rounded over with a sander. How to Make a Spline Jig - Fast and Easy
A plywood spline can be used without it affecting the appearance of the joint. If you have any questions or comments about this article, don't hesitate to contact me and let me know.
Return from Spline Joint to Woodworking Joints. Contact Disclaimer Privacy Statement. How To. Miters are not the strongest joints, but we use them all the time for joining picture frames together. A common way to make these is to cut a slot about halfway through the corner after gluing the frame together and slide in the spline.
Standard spline that goes halfway through the miter. In this method, the picture frame and the splines are glued up all at the same time. These splines are stronger because they run all the way through the width of the miter and the grain is positioned to run perpendicular to the miter. Making the slot-cutting jig is simple. Regular slot cutting jig left and alternative jig. Glue together two scraps of plywood. One a little taller than your rip fence, and the other piece square.
Next, square this assembly up by cutting off the bottom triangle of the square, shaving off a little of the rectangle at the same time. After cutting your picture frame pieces with their 45 degree miters. Line up one end with the triangle so that the end is flush with the table. To keep this from slipping, clamp the board to the upper part of the jig and cut out a slot. To make the slot on the opposite end, keep the same side toward the fence and cut the slot using the other side of the triangle.
The grain direction of these splines if what helps give these miters their strength, You want the grain to be running perpendicular to the miters, not the same direction. To make these, select a board that is wider than the length of the miter joint. Then crosscut this thin board into the widths of your miter slots. I used a thicker board to hold down the thin splines and keep them from flying away when I cut them. The nice thing about these splines is that they help with the corner alignment of the picture frame and prevent them from sliding apart.
Glue them into the slots and glue the miters together all at one. One the glue is dry, cut off the excess and sane the frames smooth. BasicsHow To.
